How EBCOBook Creates Its Books

EBCOBook is an independent nonfiction publishing project focused on history, science, technology and civilization. We use modern AI-assisted tools as part of our publishing workflow while keeping responsibility for the final books we publish. This page explains why the catalogue is the size it is, what the tools do, and what we do ourselves.
Why there are a hundred books
The catalogue was built as a single programme rather than title by title: a planned list of around one hundred subjects — the wars, empires, revolutions, discoveries and inventions that explain how the modern world came to be — with one substantial book per subject.
Every title is written for the general reader, in flowing narrative prose, and every title is published under the E.B Cohen name. The books are meant to be finished: the background, the main events and the consequences of a subject in one volume, rather than a fragment of it.
1. Subject selection
Subjects are chosen and approved by the publisher from that list. Before any writing begins, each book gets a written plan: the concept and positioning, the structure and table of contents, the target length, the register it should be written in, and the standard works on the subject it will sit alongside. Nothing is drafted until the plan is approved.
2. Research
For each book, research notes are compiled from published, publicly available sources — reference works, museum and archive websites, and the established literature on the subject — with claims linked to their sources and contested figures flagged, so that the manuscript carries the uncertainty rather than smoothing it over.
We do not carry out original archival or primary-source research. The books are syntheses of existing scholarship for a general audience, and each one closes with a bibliography or further-reading guide pointing to the works a reader can go on to.
3. AI-assisted drafting
AI tools, including Anthropic's Claude, are used to organise the research, draft chapters against the approved plan and a written style guide for that title, restructure explanations, and improve readability.
The style guides set hard rules for the drafting: flowing prose rather than lists, technical terms explained on first use, contested claims attributed to the people who dispute them, and no invented quotations, scenes or figures. The tools do not choose the subjects, approve the plans, or decide what is published.
4. Editorial review
Drafts are reviewed against their plan and style guide and revised before release. Several titles were substantially expanded in a second pass when the first draft was judged too thin.
Automated checks confirm that every chapter is present and within its expected length, that front and back matter exist, and that the typeset files, ebook file and covers are complete and consistent. The publisher reviews the results and decides whether a book is released, held back for revision, or withdrawn.
5. Accuracy
The books are popular history and science, not academic reference works. Dates, figures and events are taken from the sources gathered during research; where historians disagree or estimates vary, the books say so and give the range rather than picking a number.
Even so, a book of this length can contain errors. We do not claim that every statement has been independently verified by a specialist. When an error is reported, we correct it in the next edition.
6. Formatting and publication
Finished manuscripts are typeset into an EPUB ebook and print-ready interiors, and each title gets its own cover, designed for the book with Canva. Files pass automated pre-publication checks — a valid EPUB structure, correct trim sizes, page counts that match the cover, cover dimensions — before release.
Books are published under the E.B Cohen name and distributed to retailers and library platforms through Draft2Digital.
7. Continuous improvement
Books are living files. When an error is found, or a chapter can be made clearer, the manuscript is revised and the files are updated. Several early titles have been re-edited and expanded since first publication.
Transparency
We disclose the use of AI tools here, on every book page on this site, and in our terms. We do not claim that the books are written entirely by hand, and we do not present the work of other authors as our own: the books are original publications, and the works they draw on are named in their bibliographies.
Available through major ebook platforms
Selected EBCOBook titles are also available through a range of established ebook retailers and reading platforms, including Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Bookshop.org, Everand, Fable, Smashwords and Tolino, and through hoopla for library lending. Availability varies by title and country; each book page lists the stores that carry it.
These platforms distribute the books. Naming them does not imply that they endorse this site.
